    Prerequisites

    All students must complete the following courses (or equivalent) prior to enrolling in core courses for the the BS in Information Technology program:

    • COP 2250 Programming in Java

    • PSY 2012 Introduction to Psychology

    • MAD 1100 Math Concepts for IT or COT 3100 Discrete Structures

    • CGS 1920 Introduction to Computing

    • CGS 2518 Computer Data Analysis or CGS 2060 Introduction to Microcomputers or CGS 2100 Introduction to Micro for Business

    • MAC 1147 Pre-Calculus Trigonometry

    Core Courses

    All students must complete all of the following courses:

    • CEN 3721 Human Computer Interaction

    • CGS 3767 Computer Operating Systems

    • CGS 4285 Applied Computer Networking

    • CGS 4854 Web Site Construction and Management

    • CNT 4403 Computing and Network Security

    Students must take 5 elective courses.  Select two areas of concentration and select at least two courses in those two selected areas (4 courses). The fifth course may be selected from any area of concentration.

    All students must complete additional general elective courses to reach a minimum of 120 total credits. Prerequisites can count as general electives.

    Interdisciplinary Credits

    Nine credits must be taken outside SCIS. These credits must be selected from the courses for a minor or certificate in another discipline. All nine credits must be taken from the same minor or certificate.

    To ensure every student’s success, we have certain admissions requirements for each of our programs. To help you through the application process, our enrollment advisors are here to answer your questions and guide you every step of the way.


    FIU Admission Requirements

    Applications are accepted for Spring, Fall and Summer terms.

    Steps to Apply

    Freshman Students

    Please submit the following:

    • Online application

    • $30 application fee.

    • Official SAT or ACT scores.

    • Official high school transcripts.

    Transfer Students

    Please submit the following:

    • Online application

    • $30 application fee.

    • Official college transcripts.

    • If you have less than 60 transferable college credits, you must also submit official high school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores in addition to any transcripts from postsecondary schools to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

    International Students

    In addition to the above requirements, international applicants should submit:

    • Official English Language Proficiency exam scores (TOEFL or IELTS).

    • NACES official course-by-course evaluation and translation of college transcripts.

    • If you have less than 60 transferrable college credits, you must also submit official high school transcripts with translation.

    Program Admission Requirements

    • Candidates must first be accepted into the university. Students admitted to Florida International University are admitted directly to their chosen major.

    • Program Completion Requirements

    A total of 120 credits are required to complete the fully online undergraduate degree. Students must complete the  University Core Curriculum ,  University requirements  and School of Computing & Information Sciences requirements while satisfying requirements toward their Information Technology major and are expected to make good progress based on critical indicators, such as GPA in specific courses or credits earned. In cases where students are not making good progress, a change of major may be required.  The School of Computing and Information Sciences advisors work to redirect students to more appropriate majors when critical indicators are not met.   • Top Faculty

    Rick Blazek

    Professor Blazek came to FIU after almost twenty years teaching at Robert Morris University Illinois. He holds an MA in Philosophy and MDiv in Theology as well as MS and PhD in Computer and Information Science. Blazek worked as a computer consultant in Oil and Gas, Retail, and Construction Engineering for more than ten years both before and after gaining his PhD. His passion for teaching and desire to understand new technologies has lead him to ongoing research in Database and Information security. Since joining FIU in 2004, Blazek has enjoyed teaching a variety of courses for the School of Computer and Information Sciences at FIU at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

    Debra Davis

    Professor Davis received her PhD in Cognitive Developmental Psychology with a minor in Statistics in 2004 from the University of Texas at Austin.  She received her Master’s degree in Computer Science from Florida International University in 2000.  She also received her Master’s in Developmental Psychology with a Minor in Statistics from the University of Texas at Austin.  In 1993, she received her B.A. with Academic and Research Honors, Psychology, minor: Computer Science, Florida International University.

    Caryl Rahn

    Professor Rahn received her Bachelors degree in Computer Science from the State University of New York College at Potsdam in 1978, and Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989. She spent over 20 years working in industry and taught for about 18 years. She is an author on two United States patents written while working at IBM.

    Michael Robinson

    Professor Robinson earned his Master of Science in Computer Science from FIU in 2007 and his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 2005 from FIU.
