More students than ever are paying someone else to write assignments for them via “essay mills”, a Swansea University study has revealed.

The survey of more than 50,000 students, found 15.7% admitted to cheating since 2014 – up from an average of 3.5% over the last 40 years.

It means about one in seven recent graduates have paid someone else to do their work for them – which could represent 31 million people worldwide.

Essay mills are legal in the UK.

However, some countries have banned them.

What is contract cheating?

  • Passing off a custom-made essay as your own is a form of plagiarism known as contract cheating
  • It involves a student ordering an essay, usually through a website, for a fee
  • But it could also be friends or family members writing an essay on a student’s behalf
  • Companies offering these sort of services are known as essay mills
  • The fee will usually depend on the essay subject, length and deadline
  • It is difficult for markers to detect when an essay bought from a website is submitted

The study, undertaken by Prof Phil Newton, looked at information dating back 40 years and covered 54,514 participants from around the world.

It showed the amount of students admitting to contract cheating, when students pass off a custom-made essay as their own, has increased over time.

But Prof Newton, director of learning and teaching at Swansea Medical School, suggested the number could be much higher, as students who have paid for essays to be written are far less likely to volunteer to take part in surveys on cheating.

“These findings underscore the need for legislation to tackle essay mills, alongside improvements in the way students are assessed and awareness-raising of the fundamentals of academic integrity,” he said.

“We need to utilise assessment methods that promote learning and at the same time reduce the likelihood that contract cheating can happen.”

  • ‘Misleading’ essay writing ads banned
  • Reality Check: Knowledge for sale?

Essay mills are legal in the UK, although there is currently a petition to change UK law as current legislation has been found to be ineffective at tackling the problem.

They are banned in the United States and New Zealand, while other countries are actively developing legislation to tackle them.

Despite not being illegal, the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), which monitors standards in higher education in the UK, said submitting an essay written by someone else is a form of plagiarism, and pupils could face expulsion from university if caught.

Earlier research from Prof Newton showed that academic integrity is not a topic that is routinely covered in teacher training programmes for staff and that students have a poor understanding of the consequences of engaging in contract cheating.

The National Union of Students Wales has been asked to comment.

Essay on “Newspaper” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Newspaper

‘News’ has four letters. These four letters stand for four directions- North, East, West, South. Reports from Four directions are given the name ‘News’. The paper on which reports are printed is called ‘newspaper’. Newspapers in the modern society have great social and educative values. They are common media of expressing views. Its principal aim is to supply news. Information with different views through comments, articles and editorials.

The newspaper provides us with up-to- date information about important political events, and topics of general interest. We are brought into touch with the current problems which affect us so much if we neglect hem. Again, the morning paper brings to our knowledge all the notable events which occurred in distant lands only the day before. The advertisement column of newspaper tells us where we can find work for ourselves or improve our prospects. It provides us with the means of either disposing of our own articles or purchasing the things we stand in need of. Reviews of books given in some newspaper help us to choose the best books. Those of us who are interested in art, music, farming and sports can also find enough material for amusement.

Besides this, the newspaper tries to educate and mould public opinion. Most of us are too busy in our own affairs to think of the great political problems of our country. We go to the newspaper and accept the view it presents to us. So the opinion of the newspaper  becomes our opinion. Moreover, the    press affords platform from which advocates of social reform can press their causes on public attention. if certain wrongs are done by the Government to the people , a cry against them can be raised in newspapers.

It is evident that the newspaper is a great power in the country because it can deeply influence public opinion. The editors of newspapers have therefore a heavy responsibility. The newspaper becomes a power for evil if it distorts truth, presents only the dark. Newspapers are good means of advertisement.  They help the business. There are news about the manufactured articles, quotations of prices and rates of commodities. We get all types of information from them- social, political, commercial and educational. There is one magazine section in them. In this section there is the list of the latest books. This section is very useful for the students. they get the books of their choice. Business concerns give  their advertisements. There are advertisements of medicines. The sick people may buy medicines for their use.

There are matrimonial in the newspapers. These news help people to solve the problem of finding the  suitable matches people select matches of their choice by personal contact.

Newspaper is very important for unemployed and under – employed persons. ‘ Wants’ are given on the second page of the newspaper. The unemployed persons come to know about the vacancies. They apply for the posts suitable to them.

Newspaper is useful to every person of society. It is also beneficial to every age – child, youth, old, children , youths, and old – all take interest in newspaper. We find different kinds of advertisements , short stories, historical events , religious doctrines, political speeches, legal opinions, sports, matrimonials, lost and found, admission, test dates and let, property, services etc.

Thus we see that the newspapers sever the society in different ways. It also helps in shaping the destiny of a nation its misuse may cause great harm to society. It has been a must,’ with tea refreshment. It is our daily mental refreshment. When we do not get the newspaper to read due to any cause, it affects us. We recollect again and again to have a reading. The habit of reading newspaper is understood a good cultured habit. A good newspaper is a watch dog of democracy.

Essay On: Newspapers

Life without newspaper is difficult to imagine. It is the first thing that we look for every morning. It brings us news and views from all corners of the world. Any event or occurrence of importance that takes place is reported by the newspapers.

The newspapers carry information for everyone-businessman, politician, unemployed people, players and kids etc. It widens knowledge, keeps one abreast of all advances made in the fields of science, education, medicine and technology.

Newspapers are important pillar in a democracy. A free press not only makes people aware of the views and policies of government, but also of their rights. It keeps the government informed of people’s wishes, desires and aspiration can be expressed.

Newspapers keep us in constant touch with news, developments, changes, advances and occurrences in each nook and corner of the world and at a very little price to the reader. It’s popularity gives it immense power in molding public opinion.

Unfortunately most newspapers have vested interests. They are owned by capitalist and have to toe their line. Some newspapers are organs of political party. Their loyalty to the party is greater than sense of fair play.

It is essential to cultivate faculty in the readers, so that they do not believe every word of news. The newspaper should also have a very strict code of ethics to which it should conscientiously adhere to.
